        Homemade Garam Masala Spice Mix



Garam Masala is a roasted spice blend commonly used in northern India. This homemade version will be much fresher and better tasting than the commercial product found for sale. It can be kept for up to 6 months in an airtight container.

This recipe produces the preferred spice mix to use when making Garam Masala Bison Meatballs.

        
       Ingredients

1/4 cup
1/4 cup
1 1/2 tbsp

whole cumin seeds
whole coriander seeds
cardamom seeds (whole seeds, not powder)
three inch long cinnamon sticks broken into smaller pieces
whole cloves
whole black peppercorns
bay leaves, broken into pieces

       Directions

  • Combine all ingredients in a small stainless steel bowl.
  • Heat a cast iron frying pan over medium-high heat for 2 minutes.
  • Add spices and stir/agitate pan contents constantly until spices turn brown and exude a distinct spicy aroma, about 10 minutes.
  • Return cooked spices to stainless steel bowl and allow them to cool completely.
  • Grind to a fine powder in a spice mill or food processor. Store in an airtight container.

  • Recipe makes about 3/4 cup of Garam Masala spice mix.
